Writer’s note: We keep looking at the most memorable games I’ve covered for each area school. We’ve already done Nocona, Vernon and Seymour.
The Memorial tennis team pulled into the Munday Allsup’s Saturday afternoon after a long day of tennis at Abilene Cooper.
My first thought: Man, it’s been a while since I stepped foot in Munday.
My second thought: Man, a lot of great football players have come from this small town.
I’ve always thought Munday was unique in multiple ways. Let’s start with the mascot first.
Moguls. It doesn’t get recognized around the state enough as one of the most unique in Texas. You’ll always see the Blizzard (Winters), Unicorns (New Braunfels) and Pied Pipers (Hamlin), make “best Texas high school nickname” lists.
But you’ll rarely see “Moguls” on any list. They’re named after the fierce warriors who conquered parts of India centuries ago, not successful industry leaders or bumps on ski slopes.
Munday’s got a bold purple/yellow color scheme that I like (no other area school is purple besides Benjamin).
Probably one of the area’s coolest football traditions – which I wrote about for the TRN six years ago – is that Munday only has Homecoming every four years. So that weekend is always a really big deal, and the previous queen must make sure she comes back so she can hand off her crown. They play that game on a Saturday night.
And Scruggs Field isn’t going to win any beauty points compared to some of its more modern small-school stadium counterparts. In fact, Munday’s nearby track-only facility* is probably nicer than its football facility. But Scruggs has a quaint charm like your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
