Looking back at the Cubs' quarter century of gridiron success
High school football isn’t all rainbows and sunshine.
For every team that wins, another loses. Continual setbacks can be brutal.
Olney knows this better than everyone.
This past 25 years has been a rough stretch for the Cubs, specifically a 1-59 record from 2012-17.
But Olney has also had more success than people give them credit for. Before we get to the harsh realities of the Cubs’ struggles, let’s look at the high points.
Easily the best season – the only district title and lengthy playoff run in the past 25 years – occurred in 2000. It was the culmination of what coach Kent Jackson built before leaving for Sweetwater.
When Jackson came to Young County in 1995, the Cubs had been 1-17-2 the previous two seasons. What’s worse is that they averaged 5.75 points per game during that span.
Jackson’s 1996 team showed improvement and then the Cubs started to take off. Three straight winning seasons followed and then came a 10-2 mark in 1999 that was Olney’s first double-digit victory total since 1984.
