Nearly every area passing and receiving record has been set over the past couple of decades.
Most passing yards in a career? Graham’s Case McCoy from 2006-09. Most receiving yards in a single season? Rider’s David Nelson in 2004. Most single-game passing yards? Old High’s Dylan Sheffield in 2011.
Every area record passing and receiving record has been set in the 2000s. Except one.
In a 1984 district game against Aspermont, Chillicothe’s Randy Boone hauled in 357 receiving yards. It lasted as a state record for 25 years until Richardson Pearce’s Blake Jumonville broke it with 386 yards in a 2009 game against Carrollton Newman-Smith.
In fact, Boone’s 357 yards still ranks 12th all-time in the state, an impressive accomplishment given how football has drastically changed. And it’s still SIXTY more receiving yards than any local wideout has ever had in a game.
But what if I told you there’s at least some reason to question whether Boone’s output was legitimate. I’m not saying Randy Boone didn’t torch Aspermont one fall Friday night more than 40 years ago.
But for starters, it didn’t happen in 1984. Because Chillicothe didn’t play Aspermont that season.
