Ranking the area's best Class 3A teams

Breaking down Pigskinprep.com's ratings that look at quality Holliday squads

Earlier in the week, I looked at the area’s best large-school teams (5A/4A) over the past 25 years based on their Pigskinprep.com rating.

When trying to come up with who’d be the highest-rated area Class 3A programs, one thought kept popping up in my mind: Which Holliday team is it?

There have been so many dominant Eagles teams over the past couple decades. Eleven of those 25 seasons have ended with state quarterfinal appearances. It’s silly to think, but it’s almost a down season if Holliday only wins one or two playoff games.

Was the top Holliday team going to come from the Terry Wolf era? Or Frank Johnson? Or Kyle Atwood?

Was it going to be one of Jett Johnson’s teams or Jaxx Johnson’s teams? I know those brothers have hashed it out regarding which of their teams was better. Was it going to be one of the early 2000 Eagle squads before I started at the paper or this past season when I first started Red River Roundup?

The answer is below. Of the top 20 teams I ranked, 10 of them were from Holliday with a couple from the other area schools like Jacksboro and Henrietta thrown in. And a couple now-2A schools made the cut, too.

Again, as I mentioned earlier in the week, I ranked these teams solely off the ratings given by Pigskinprep.com when the season is over. A team with a 155-point rating would be a 10-point favorite over a team with a 145-point rating if you want to compare schools on this list.
