Recapping the area's last weekend of football
Graham/Holliday thoughts and other notes from across the region
It can be a cruel sport.
Don’t get me wrong. Texas high school football is the best.
There’s nothing like it. Nothing that can bring a small-town community together and evoke as much passion as it does.
But man, it can be heartbreaking. Holliday and Graham had their stellar seasons end a couple days ago in the same round very different ways.
The Eagles could play Gunter 10 times, and I don’t think they’d have many chances to prevail. That’s not an insult to Holliday as much as a credit to Gunter.
But Graham’s triple-overtime loss to Brock is going to take the Young County town some time to get over. I believe the Steers would win that game most of the time.
Kudos to the Eagles for finding a way to emerge victorious, but Graham’s going to want that one back.
Holliday may end up getting to say it lost to the eventual state champion. I don’t think Graham will – I think Carthage beats the Eagles this week.
The losses aren’t the same. Holliday was down 30-0 one snap into the third quarter, while Graham led for most of the second half.
But they both ended terrific seasons and the high school careers of some special seniors.
