GRAHAM – The yells were primal. The emotion was raw.

When Vernon coach Kevin Sherrill received the gold ball for his Lions’ well-deserved 28-9 victory over Sweetwater Friday, the energy buzzing around Newton Field’s home sideline was palpable.

Vernon’s seniors were in sixth grade the last time the Wilbarger County seat won a playoff game. Didn’t matter.

The Lions were double-digit underdogs and coming off a disappointing Week 11 loss. Didn’t matter.
