On the afternoon Iowa Park’s head football coach abruptly resigned more than a week ago, I received a call from a friend who relayed what he’d heard.

“Don’t be surprised if they hire someone who will make everyone in Iowa Park excited.”

There’s only one person who falls under that category. Weldon Nelms.

That’s it. That’s the list.

Nine days later, Nelms was approved as the Hawks’ head football coach and athletic director, returning to a place he once called home and a place he still holds dear.

But why would the 69-year-old two-time state champion take on a job he hasn’t held since 2016? And at a place he left in 1999 after six successful seasons with the Hawks?

Better let the THSCA Hall of Famer tell you himself.

“I never thought this would happen,” Nelms said late Thursday night. “I’m still pinching myself. When it was brought to my attention, I thought they wouldn’t be crazy enough to ask me to come back. All of a sudden, it happened.
