Looking back at the Coyotes' gridiron success since the 2000 season
Author’s Note: This offseason, we’re looking at the past quarter century (2000-24) of football for every area program. We’ve already posted Vernon and Bowie. This week we break down Wichita Falls High School. Even though the three old WFISD schools don’t exist anymore, they played football for 24 of the 25 years and will be included.
You can’t find anyone around this area that can match Wichita Falls High School’s playoff excellence.
Six state titles – only one school (Throckmorton) has more than half of that. Ten championship game appearances and 15 state semifinal appearances are also easily the most.
When I wrote a story years ago for the TRN about each area school’s toughest loss in program history, it was eye-opening to see how close the Coyotes were to having double-digit championships.
Once Wichita Falls ISD became a multi-high school district in the early 1960s, the program wasn’t quite as dominant (one state title in 1969).
But the Coyotes nearly won it all in the first season of the new century and Leo Brittain’s last season as head coach. They returned several key starters off a 10-win team that went three rounds deep in 1999.
